As you may remember from previous posts, I have one of my mom’s horses here at my place, and she has one of mine at hers. This was done for a variety of reasons, but we’ve decided to make a switch for the summer.
Bailey will move to my farm sometime in May, and Traveller will go to mom’s. Bailey has never been pastured with mares before, so I’m going to keep him separate; he’ll have his own stall, the ring area (which is basically just a large dry lot at this point), and the back field. Misty and Takoma will have their stalls, the dry lot, and the side field. Of course, the horses will be able to touch noses as the fences are shared, but I’m hoping this won’t be a problem.
I feel a little bad that Bailey will be by himself, but the girls will literally be right there. And if it doesn’t work out, then we’ll just switch back. I’ll miss Trav, of course, but it will be nice not to have to drive anywhere when I want to ride Bailey. And since Trav is the only gelding who does especially well with Takoma, we’ll switch back in late fall so Trav can spend the winter here again with his beloved ladies!
Fingers crossed for an easy transition! I know Patriot will enjoy a break from Bailey (because those two are not friends, unfortunately), and Trav will enjoy seeing his old buddy Jack.
